What is pilates?

Pilates aims to strengthen the body in an even way, with particular emphasis on core strength to improve general fitness and wellbeing.

Pilates exercises are done on a mat or using special equipment, such as the Reformer, Cadillac, Ladder Barrel and Wunda Chair.  With its system of pulleys and springs, handles and straps, the apparatus can provide either resistance or support, depending on your needs.

Pilates was developed by German-born Joseph Pilates, who believed mental and physical health were closely connected. His method was influenced by western forms of exercise, including gymnastics, boxing and Greco-Roman wrestling. Pilates immigrated to the US in the 1920s and opened a studio in New York, where he taught his method, which he called "contrology" – for several decades.

Who is pilates for?

Pilates has something to offer people of all ages and levels of ability and fitness, from beginners to elite athletes. The apparatus can be used to provide support for beginners and people with certain medical conditions, as well as resistance for people looking to challenge their body.

If you have any health concerns, such as a health condition or an injury, seek advice from your GP or a health professional before starting any exercise programme.

What are the health benefits of pilates?

There are many reports on the health benefits of pilates. Practitioners say regular pilates can improve posture, muscle tone, balance and joint mobility, as well as relieve stress and tension. For elite athletes, including dancers, pilates can complement training by developing whole-body strength and flexibility, and help reduce the risk of injury.

Can pilates help reduce back pain?

There's some evidence that pilates can provide pain relief to people with non-specific lower back pain. The use of apparatus enables someone with back pain to perform exercises with support.

For the exercises to be effective, they need to be tailored to the individual.

Can pilates help me lose weight?

Pilates is classed as a muscle-strengthening activity, which can help you maintain a healthy weight. Classes can vary in intensity: they can be gentle, or dynamic and offer a solid workout.

Can I injure myself doing pilates?

Pilates is a low-impact form of exercise, so injuries are uncommon. However, it's important to find a qualified teacher and a class suited to your level of fitness and ability.

Pilates teachers are not medically qualified so, if you're recovering from injury, you're advised to check with your GP or relevant health professional on the suitability of certain exercises or movements before starting a class.

What's the difference between pilates and yoga?

While the methods are different, pilates and yoga both develop strength, balance, flexibility, posture and good breathing technique.

Both systems emphasise the connection between physical and mental health, although yoga places more emphasis on relaxation and uses meditation. Pilates is performed both on apparatus and mats, whereas classic yoga doesn't require any equipment.

Pilates exercises are performed in a flow of movement without the static poses associated with yoga.

What's the difference between apparatus and mat work?

Joseph Pilates originally devised more than 500 exercises for his system, of which 34 were mat exercises.

Mat work may involve traditional pilates equipment, such as magic circles or hand weights, as well as non-pilates gear, such as stretch bands, gym balls and foam rollers. Pilates with apparatus uses equipment designed by Joseph Pilates, such as the Reformer, Cadillac, Wunda Chair, Spine Corrector and Ladder Barrel.

Mat and apparatus pilates can be adapted to suit different levels of fitness and ability. However, if you cannot lie down on a mat for whatever reason, the apparatus can provide alternative ways to exercise.  (courtesy of NHS.uk)

Reformer

Reformer Pilates is superior to mat based Pilates as the repertoire of exercises available is greatly increased providing far more variety.

Reformer exercises work muscles through a large range of motion which is ideal for building and toning muscles as well increasing stability through the joints.

It works more areas than matwork as matwork is mostly core whereas reformer works the entire body and more the peripheral muscles of the arms and legs.

Reformer Pilates is great for rehab purposes too as it allows you to exercise in a horizontal plane of motion and not be vertically loaded and weight bearing through their legs.

For example if you have had knee surgery or a knee injury, this horizontal plane enables you to strengthen the muscles of the leg through a larger range of motion using a lighter resistance than their body weight, speeding up recovery through controlled movement.

Reformer Pilates can be used as a sport specific cross training tool. Reformer Pilates works on core stabilisation which is vital to any athlete as well as muscle endurance, lactate tolerance, peripheral joint stability, muscle strength, balance, co-ordination and much more.

Our Beginner's Reformer Course (1-1 and Group) is all you need to get started on the reformer.

  1. For your first class try to arrive on time and wear a face covering before class starts ready to exercise
  2. Please try to arrive ready for your class. We have small changing facilities, but we recommend you arrive ready.
  3. The studio is based on the 2nd floor at 32 Portman Street, Glasgow, G41 1EJ. Parking after 6pm directly outside the studio is free of charge. If you are coming before 6pm please park at the junction next to Rise as that side of the street you can park all day for free.

Pre natal (and post natal!) on the Reformer is a great place to ensure you stay active during your pregnancy and after. Using the Reformer is an ideal way to keep your pelvis stable and also build pelvic floor strength.

We have many mums-to-be can taking part in our Pilates classes all through their pregnancy. We require mums-to-be to book in for a 1-1 appointment with our Studio Owner Sarah Jane at each trimester.

We generally recommend Pilates Reformer as it is much easier to do whilst expecting than Mat Pilates. The Reformer machine is higher off the ground (easier to get on and off) you can pretty much do most of the class without any issue and as long as your pregnancy remains low risk - our mums work with us right up to due date.

Our 1-1 Beginner's Reformer Course is the best way to get you started.

If you are less than 12 weeks pregnant you'll no doubt be feeling low on energy, possibly sick. So it might be best to book once you're at that 12 weeks stage coming into your second trimester - your energy will come back. It's really a personal preference.

For post natal, you are welcome to join us 6 weeks after normal delivery and generally 12 weeks with c-section.
